David Geffen: An Awe-Inspiring Rags To Riches Story

What can you expect from a guy who had been sleeping on a living room couch while growing up and never bought any first hand clothes as a child? Whatever your expectations would be, you certainly won’t expect that child to become a billionaire one day.  That’s what David Geffen has achieved in just half a lifetime. David Geffen was merely 56 in 1999, when his net worth was estimated to be more than 2.3 billion. He became a millionaire at a young age of 26. The Journal has described him as the fourth richest man in Los Angles. David Geffen has proved to the world that there is nothing in the world you can’t achieve with sheer courage, talent and determination.

In 2010 Geffen was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and bought a 377- yacht named “Pelorus” from Russian billionaire Roman Abramovitch. Geffen also has massive contemporary art collection. He launched the careers of Eagles, Aerosmith and Guns N’ Roses and founded Asylum Records and Geffen Records. Amazingly Geffen got his start in show business by sorting mail at the William Morris talent agency. In 2012 Geffen’s estimated net worth was $5.5 billion.  Let’s have a look at his astounding and awe-inspiring story.

If you happen to look at the educational qualifications of David Geffen, you would not believe that he could achieve astronomical success. He was a college dropout and passed high school with a mere 66. These types of academic achievements are enough to label anybody a failure in life, but life is much more than academics. There are two types of people in this world; book smart and street smart. As it turned out David Geffen belonged to the latter category.

David Geffen’s remarkable talent is was spotting the outstanding talent. His ability to spot amazing talent in the music and television industry enabled him to start an independent company named, “Dream Works SKG”.  He started the company in partnership with already famous Steven Spielberg and Jeffery Katzenberg.  Paul Allen of Microsoft also helped financially. They may not have realised that it was a beginning of lifelong friendship between them. Loyalty and friendship are some of the things that David Geffen values the most. It was his friendship with some of the biggest names in the industry that enabled him to bring Dream Works SKG into reality.

As a kid, David Geffen was a child of small frame who used to get beaten up by other kids of their tough neighbourhood. Though his father was an intellectual, he never worked, whatever he learnt was from her mother. His mother was a strong willed woman who used to run her own corset and brassiere business. He learnt from her how to handle customers efficiently. For instance; once his mother mistakenly quoted a cheaper price for a piece of the garment, but she stood by the price on the condition that the woman buy the garment then and there. The woman refused and left the shop. When she came back she asked for a lower price but Geffen’s mother did not budge. This incidence left a deep impact on the psyche of young David Geffen and helped him to learn about dealing with different types of people in the world.

David Geffen’s life is full of people who helped him in his success.  By will power, determination, and an unparallel ability to learn from others Geffen achieved his dreams.
