Elizabeth Taylor Jewelry Auction Brings in $137 Million

Christie’s two day auction of Elizabeth Taylor’s art, clothing and jewelry exceeding expectation, bringing in a record breaking $137 Million. All items sold for more than their estimated price, making this one of the most valuable sales in auction history. Many observers believed the auction would bring in $20 Million and they were mistaken.

The largest bid was $11.8 Million for a 16th century pearl, La Peregrina, once owned by Mary I Queen of England and other Spanish queens Margarita and Isabel. Richard Burton bought the pearl in 1969 for $37,000. Taylor later designed a ruby and diamond necklace around the pearl.

Other notable Burton gifts to Taylor include the “Taj Mahal” diamond sold for $8.8 Million and a 33.19 carat diamond ring for $8.78 Million.

Kim Kardashian was one of the bidders, paying $65,000 for 3 jade and diamond, Lorraine Schwartz bangles. Kardashian is a big fan of Elizabeth Taylor having once interviewed her for Harper’s Bazaar.

Another Taylor fan paid $600,000 for a diamond and sapphire ring given to her by friend, Michael Jackson.

Part of the auction proceeds will go to The Elizabeth Taylor Aids foundation.
