William Henry Gates III

Bill gates is one of the most recognized and successful businessmen globally. He is an American business magnate, philanthropist and a computer programmer. He is also the chairman of Microsoft which is the largest personal- computer software company he co- founded with Paul Allen.

Bill was born on October 28th 1955 into a family of rich history in business, community service and politics. These were some of the traits from his family line that Gates never took for granted and has maintained to date.

He was a smart boy in elementary school and surpassed all his fellow classmates particularly in mathematics and science. He was then enrolled to a private school (Lakeside school) after his parents noticed his intelligence.  This was the first time Gates was exposed to computers and has been quoted as saying `when I was thirteen, my school (Lakeside School) installed a teletype machine that connected in downtown Seattle, from that point on, my friends and I spent most of our  free time writing programs and figuring out how to make the computer do interesting things’.

While in the eighth grade, his interest in programming the GE system in BASIC saw him get excused from some of his math classes. It was with that computer that he wrote his first computer program, an implementation of tic- tac- toe which allowed a user play games against the computer. The machine ability to execute software perfectly fascinated Gates and a few of his friends.

His interest in computers saw Gates and several of his friends get in to a little trouble with Computer Center Corporation (CCC) for exploiting bugs in the operating system. However, he later found himself learning source code from the corporation as well as getting more computer time in exchange to find bugs in CCC’s software.  This arrangement continued until the company went out of business in 1970.

Gates and three of his friends were hired the following year by Information Science Inc. to write payroll programs in COBOL which gave them the more time of exposure they craved for. His programming abilities were now well known by the school administrators who requested him to write a program to schedule students’ classes. `It was hard to tear myself from a machine at which I could so unambiguously demonstrate success’ he would later say.

Gates formed a venture (Traf- O- Data) with Allen at 17 years of age. This was used to make traffic counters based on the Intel 8008.  He also served as a congressional page in the House of Representatives in U.S. in 1973.

He was accepted to Harvard where he met  Steve Ballmer. While at Harvard, Gates created  algorithms that solved formerly unsolvable series of problems. He had his paper published on the solution he had come up with in Harvard and continued spending more time with computers. Although he did not know on what to major in while in Harvard, Gates knew that one thing he was interested in was computers and programming in particular.

The following year, Gates and Allen saw an opportunity to start their own company after talking about the idea with his supportive parents. After extensive research and studies, Gates and Allen were able to come up with their own Altair emulator and a BASIC interpreter which landed them a deal with MITs.  `Micro- Soft’ was the name of his partnership with Allen which was located in Albuquerque

In the following years, Gates’ intelligence saw their company develop partnerships with several other companies such as IBM in which they took advantage of their popularity to make good returns. He also promoted Microsoft by appearing in a number of ads and T.V shows.

In addition to all this, Gates went further to invest in many other projects including energy, Corbis, Cascade Investments and BGc3, which saw his status rise more and more. He is also best known for a number of his books such as `The Road Ahead’ and films (Waiting for Superman and The Virtual Revolution) in which he shows more concern on the environment and inspiring other.

Gates is also a well known philanthropist having donated a lot of funds globally to help combat poverty, research of new drugs against diseases such as HIV/ AIDs AND Boost education. His charitable deeds have had a significant influence in many countries especially the third world economies. Gates donates funds through the foundation he started with his wife (Bill and Melinda Gates foundation).

Although Gates was brought up in a rather rich background, he never relied on the wealth of his family. His life tells the story of a man who followed his passion by hard work and interest to become one of the richest men in the world. Taking from all of his family the values, he went on to get heavily involved with not only his passion with computers, but also to try and solve some of the problems facing the planet including, energy, diseases, the need for better education for everyone and better health for the less privileged.

He has been ranked as the richest man on the globe in the Forbes magazine severally and also as one of the most influential people of all times in numerous magazines. He is also estimated to be worth about U.S $61 billion in 2012 and his style of management is well admired my many.

Gates remains involved in mentoring others from time to time and always challenging leaders to try out on new and better ways of management and leadership to make a better life for everyone. This is surely a man who has beaten all the odds and risen to great heights.
