Despite her talent, Charice and her family have struggled with poverty and violence throughout the years. When she was three years old she saw her father point a gun at her mother during an argument. She, her mother and brother fled from her father for a better life. Because they had very little money, Charice convince her mother to enter her into singing competitions to help support the family. They entered several competitions often winning. They were so poor that they had to borrow travel money from family and friends and pay them back with their winnings.
